China Launched Its Frst All-Electric Cargo Ship Powered by A 2,400-Kilowatt-Hour Battery
Geschreven op 5-4-2019 - Erik van Erne. Geplaatst in Vervoer en OVChina launched its first all-electric cargo ship. The 230-foot-long boat travels only eight miles per hour, but the ship has zero emissions of waste gas pollutants.
The irony, however, is that the ship is going to transport coal, more than 2,000 tons in the inner part of the Pearl River.
The all-electric boat is powered by enough lithium batteries to power 40 cars, a battery capacity of 2,400 kilowatt-hours. After two hours of loading, the ship can run for 50 miles.
The main cost of the new energy cargo vessel depends on the amount of lithium battery with which it is equipped. The ship can transport more than 2,000 tons of goods, or for this ship, coal.
As the boat is totally electric, it does not represent a threat to the environment. The technology will soon be used in passenger or engineering ships. But even if the ship does not produce new emissions, it transports coal along the Pearl River in Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province.
Both shipyards will be equipped with charging stations that can recharge the battery in two hours, approximately the time it takes to load and unload the ship. This type of boat takes into consideration the harmony between humans and nature and can protect the quality of water and marine life, and should be copied by other ships that sail on local rivers.
The environmental costs of cargo ships are considerable. The shipping industry is responsible for 3 percent of global emissions.
